Suopheiya 索菲亚
Pseudonymous artist, designer and socio-political activist, Suopheiya uses various mediums to subversively depict political issues out of context and using them for social awareness.
Suopheiya's mixed media artwork ranges from interactive installations, photography, cinematography, set design, critical spatial practices, and performances—themes ranging from pop and urban culture, post-capitalism and post-colonialism, with tangible public and social impact.
With thought-provoking, often satirical, visually striking creations, using pop culture aesthetics as an ambush to address political issues, Suopheiya has managed to spark crucial conversations and challenge societal norms, inspiring other artists to use their work and ideas as a means of activism and igniting radical change.
Suopheiya first burst onto the art scene in 2018 with Gólgota Burger, an interactive installation that featured the satire of an infamous fast food chain if they were to be transparent about the reality of their 100% dead animal menu, revealing the behind the scenes of the animal industry and its devastating impact worldwide. The playful yet cringy trojan horse made out of burger artefacts managed to capture public attention during two consecutive group shows in Berlin, Germany.
Another notable project, OMOB (On My Own Body), is a photo series that echoed the frenzy of Elon Musk of sending 1 million people onto Mars by 2050. Reflecting, as a parody, on the impossible equation of food sufficiency on a dead planet and hacking the human body to grow food, while world hunger and global warming haven't been solved on, our only habitable, planet Earth.
By juxtaposing aesthetics-driven artworks with the reality behind them, Suopheiya aimed at sparking critical thinking and radical awakening about pressing global issues.
Whether it’s addressing the food industry, climate corruption, sexism, ramping privatization worldwide, or the deadly fossil fuel industry supremacy, Suopheiya’s provocative visuals denounce the urgent need for radical action and engaging in critical discourse.
Known for using satire and pop culture references to tackle socio-economic, environmental and political issues, Suopheiya's work often involves manipulating and reimagining impactful visual narratives, that result in viral campaigns, installations, blending various mediums such as digital art, mixed media, film and photography.
Based in Europe, Suopheiya is available to participate in art exhibitions, residencies and collectives, give talks and workshops and take on commission work. Reach out!
